William Paul “Bill” McCartney was born on August 22, 1940, in Riverview, Michigan. Raised in a Catholic home, he grew up with a love for football and a competitive spirit that led him to play center and linebacker at the University of Missouri. Though he practiced religion outwardly, it wasn’t until his thirties that his faith became deeply personal. A life-changing spiritual encounter set him on a new path-one marked not just by wins on the field, but by a bold and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
In 1982, McCartney became head coach at the University of Colorado. From the start, he viewed coaching as a calling, not just a career. He led with integrity, infused his program with biblical principles, and cultivated a culture where players were challenged to grow not only as athletes, but as men. Despite criticism for incorporating faith into his coaching, he remained unwavering. Under his leadership, Colorado rose to national prominence, winning three consecutive conference titles and capturing the national championship in 1990.
In 1990, sensing a deeper call beyond the gridiron, McCartney launched Promise Keepers-a Christ-centered movement aimed at challenging men to live with integrity, lead their families, and serve their churches and communities. What began as a small gathering quickly grew into a nationwide revival. Promise Keepers filled stadiums across the country, and in 1997, nearly a million men gathered at the National Mall to commit themselves to seven promises of godly living. McCartney’s passion was clear: to raise up men who honored God in every part of life.
Coach McCartney passed away on January 10, 2025, at the age of 84. He left behind a powerful legacy-not just as a Hall of Fame coach, but as a spiritual father to a generation of men. His influence stretched far beyond football fields, shaping lives in homes, churches, and communities across the nation. His unwavering faith, bold leadership, and relentless pursuit of God’s call continue to inspire those who believe that true victory begins in the heart. Coach Mac will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for the way he lived-with purpose, passion, and complete surrender to Christ.
